For our first reading assignment, I wrote down 15 materials that are not conventionally used for sculptures. I'm constantly thinking of everything as a sculpture material, my mom even calls me a hoarder because I keep things because I think "I could make a sculpture with that;" I just call them collections. I had some organic items on the list, but most of my objects I thought of were items I have or can find at my parents' thrift shop.
I sketched a few different ideas, but the two I liked the most were books and thumb taks and pop tops and flowers. Since books are such physical items, covering them in something sharp would make it pretty much useless. My other sculpture idea uses pop tops and flowers. The sculpture is a can made of pop tops that looks like it's pouring something onto the ground where the flowers would be. I would connect them with a plastic cord and possibly make a structure to put them around to hold the shape. The sculpture would be a nod about how people are destroying the planet when they throw away things that can be recycled. Americans alone throw away 1500 cans per SECOND when they can easily be recycled. There is no limit to how many times a can is able to be recycled, but if they are just thrown away, they will still be a can hundreds of years from now.
