Nick Cave earned his MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1989. He also attended North Texas State University from 1984-1986, and before that earned his BFa at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1982. Pictured above are his "Soundsuits" which blend fashion and sculpture. These suits were originally inspired by the Rodney King beating and serve as metaphorical suits of armor. The suits conceal the wearer's race, gender, and class so the audience doesn't have any kind of bias toward the piece.
Nick Cave works with choreographers and dancers to create unique experiences. The suits are very colourful and are made from many different materials. They have many different textures and each suit is different and has its own feeling. If he were in our class, he would probably make his belt buckle very colourful and maybe have it make some kind of noise. I think he would focus more on the case. He would probably make it very fun, adding a lot of different items and textures onto it. His Soundsuits are more about what's on the outside than what's on the inside.
